University of Leicester - Online PhD Program

Online PhD (Research) by Distance Learning

The first intake of distance-learning PhD students, 2001

In January 2001 we launched a PhD programme for part-time students by distance learning. Our first student graduated in 2004, rather quicker than many full-time students! Essentially a UK-style degree concentrating on research rather than taught courses, this has proved extremely popular. The programme - lasting up to six years - is designed to support the particular needs of distance learners by combining research training modules, short residential visits, and intensive supervision. We now have more than 20 students studying for their PhD with us.

Acceptable thesis topics can be virtually anything relating to the wide-ranging research interests of the School's substantial staff of archaeologists and ancient historians, who constitute potential PhD supervisors. At present we are particularly keen to receive applications from students with interests in ancient history.

A research degree by distance learning is not suitable for everyone. Selection has to be extremely careful to ensure that the right students, supervisors, research topics and resources are all properly in place together. We now know the typical profile of a successful PhD student by distance learning. Usually you will already be working professionally in archaeology or a related field, and with access to any necessary specialist facilities. You will typically already have extensive knowledge of the material which is to form the basis of your research, and will be looking for a way to formalise and extend your knowledge and skills within the framework of a research degree. Award of a UK doctorate is based solely upon individual research, presented in the form of an 80,000-word thesis. We expect prospective candidates to have a good honours degree or its equivalent in archaeology, anthropology, classics/ancient history, or a related discipline. You may also have an appropriate Master’s degree, or other demonstrable research experience and writing skills, and you will almost always have extensive professional experience in your proposed field of study.

Please note that we can only undertake to supervise topics for which we have staff with appropriate expertise, though we can sometimes make arrangements to include specialist external advisors. Even where we have members of staff with relevant specialist knowledge, it may be that they are unable at present to supervise additional research students. Find out more about the School, its staff, and the rich variety of their current research areas and field projects, visit our research pages and staff pages. For more information about the current postgraduate research topics visit our postgraduate research page.

Distance Learning Ph.D. Facts

Online PhD Program - Distance Learning Ph.D. Facts

As an ally to Muslims in more than 50 countries. Its true that new kinds of congregational paradigms are emerging, and the evangelical seminaries in particular are paying a lot of attention to those new forms. By increasing ones education by a year or more one may be able to serve more time in the field. How do you explain such hesitancy about the ministry? Earlier you referred to the decline of social prestige associated with ministry. Programs is extremely small.

One proposal has been to set up voucher systems, shifting some funds that denominations currently give to schools into scholarships or forgivable loans to students. I experienced the strength of this model when the world council of churches afforded me a year at Lincoln Theological College in England. Seminaries sometimes offer limited undergraduate programs and often offer post-graduate professional and theological degrees such as the doctor of ministry and doctor of philosophy. Fielding Graduate University's PhD Online Program

Clinical Psychology, PhD Program Overview

Fielding Graduate University's PhD Program in Clinical Psychology is the only distributed learning doctoral program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). The program offers a PhD degree in Clinical Psychology with elective concentrations in:

Forensic Psychology
Health Psychology
Neuropsychology
Parent-Infant Mental Health
The Prevention and Control of Violence

Please note that, unlike our other programs, the Clinical Psychology Program accepts applications only from individuals residing in the contiguous states of the United States (except Oregon and Oklahoma), and in Canada. Thus the program is not offered in Hawaii, Alaska or overseas. This is primarily because clinical training placements require Fielding approval as well as on-site supervision which we are unable to provide outside the contiguous United States and Canada.

Fielding Graduate University has provided distributed learning for over 25 years. Socialization into the field of clinical psychology is provided by intensive faculty-student face-to-face contact at local cluster meetings, national sessions, clinical and research sessions. Structured learning activities that take place over the Fielding's Education Link & Information eXchange network (FELIX) deepen interactions between faculty and students.

The Clinical Psychology PhD program provides students with a breadth of theoretical perspectives, clinical training experiences and research methodologies; students are encouraged to take a broad view of clinical psychology - to integrate human behavior theory, practice and research at the individual, group and societal level. As future psychologists, students prepare to work with individuals, groups and systems - to apply theoretically grounded and research-based interventions that promote growth and change toward healthy and productive living. The program is designed to support individual strengths and initiative.
  • Students have flexibility in program planning and are supported in acquiring knowledge and experience that best suit their learning styles.
  • Student progress is monitored according to program policies and standards; however, students are expected to choose a route which addresses their individual preferences, strengths and weaknesses.
  • Students develop individualized learning plans that accommodate the heterogeneity in their levels of prior education and training.
  • Attention to differences in preparation and background is reflected in a competency-based learning environment that values close collegial relationships between students and faculty.

Commitment to Diversity

In accordance with Fielding's commitment to diversity, School of Psychology faculty and consultants represent a wide spectrum of current theories, research, and derivative practices. A student's development within his or her own social and cultural context is respected and encouraged. Students' attention and sensitivity to differences and similarities in race, class, gender, and ethnicity are developed in relation to psychological theory, research and practice.

Scholar-Practitioner Model

The School of Psychology endorses a Scholar-Practioner Model of education and training. This model expresses an ideal of professional excellence grounded in theory and research and informed by experiential knowledge and ethical conduct. Scholar-practitioners are committed to learning new avenuew of effectiveness in their work and in conceptualizing that work in relation to the broader scholarly context. They explicitly reflect upon and assess the impact of their work. Their professional activities and the knowledge they develop are centered on an active exchange within the communities of practice and scholarship (McClintock, 2004). The Scholar-Practitioner Model typically utilizes methods of scholarship that employ empirical research designs and methods of sampling; empirical methods for gathering data, and quantitative and qualitative methods for analyzing data and substantiating interpretations and conclusions.

Outcome Data

In accordance with requirements of the American Psychological Association (APA), Fielding Graduate University provides outcome data pertaining to the education of our graduate students. To review these data, download the outcome data sheet (PDF).
