Education Online - AIU Overview

Overview of Distance Learning Programs at Atlantic International University (AIU)

It is common knowledge that a college degree will improve your marketability and earning potential. So why do many students fail to finish college or stop at the bachelors level? The answer is: time, distance, money. The distance learning programs at AIU address these obstacles directly with self paced, online and affordable degree programs for adult students. A university degree can boost earning power by up to $2.3 million over a lifetime. Qualified people are passed over for job opportunities and promotions, simply because they don't have a college degree. Don't put your future on hold any longer; invest in your future today!

Earning your degree online or via distance learning with AIU is extremely enticing:

Work on assignments when convenient for you
Study at home or office
Access learning resources online any time you need them
Determine the courses that are most relevant to you
Earn credit for work experience gained through life long learning

But earning a degree via distance learning is not right for everyone. There is the mistaken belief or myth that online distance learning programs are easier than traditional courses. The hard reality is that the dropout rate for higher education online programs is typically 20 percent higher than it is for traditionally delivered programs.

Some of the challenges online distance learning students face revolves around discipline, organization and independence. In a traditional setting you would meet with a professor or attend a classroom, this forces you to get you work and readings done. Since AIU programs are self paced, students need to have the discipline to push them-selves and impose deadlines to guarantee progress is made on their assignments. AIU students enjoy a greater freedom in the content of their assignments which in turn requires a greater degree of organization. Due to the nature of distance learning students will need to be comfortable reading material on their own and working on exercises independently.

To assist students and increase graduation rate AIU provides each student with access to their Online Student Section. The Online Student Section allows students to:

Access Instructions and formats for orientation courses,
Keep a calendar of assignments with planned completion dates,
Upload/Post assignments,
Review Grades/Transcripts,
Post Questions or Messages with Student Services and/or your advisor,
Start the first phase of the program to establish the program curriculum,
Access the AIU Online Library

Research can be conducted at the AIU online library which has full text access to 1600 journals and periodicals amounting to over 10 million full text sources. This is a quick and convenient way to begin your research in any topic or area from your curriculum. Your program is primarily through independent study and research. Just like in a traditional classroom, your course text book (or other reference materials) will be your main resource. Your assessor will review the work or assignments done from the book or applied from the book to a practical exercise or project (this may be appropriate for you if your work relates to your field of study). Your grade is derived form the assessment of your assignment and an exam which will be administered orally via phone or sent to you via e-mail. There are no real deadlines or semesters to go by, you work at your own pace. Your only requirement is to set a study schedule and keep it up to date. Should there be delays or set backs just resubmit with revised schedule. The curriculum you take will be modified from the standard program to capture your unique interest and goals. Our goal is to make you aware of your strengths and weaknesses and allow your program to include the skills and knowledge that you need to reach you personal and professional aspirations.

At AIU you will actually build your own curriculum from courses that are appropriate for your personal and professional goals. Your advisor will make sure that your curriculum is appropriate for your field and complies with the generally accepted norms. Your first task is to select your appropriate courses and to learn about the profession that you want to study in. Next you may want to do a search online for your program and look at a few curriculums. You will soon learn that many of the courses offered at different institutions are similar if not identical. Your job will be to select the required number courses within your field and a research topic for your Dissertation. The number of courses will depend on your experience, transfer credits and professional goals. After you curriculum is set and your courses selected, you will proceed to work on your courses. Initially, we do not provide the student with a list of courses to choose from because the University wants you to compare other programs both domestic and international. In the event that you need assistance in designing your curriculum, one can be presented to you based on your particular situation and career goals. However, it is encouraged that you take the time to explore other programs to be more aware of what is available.

There are many questions students should ask before deciding to enroll in AIU's distance learning program(s). Prospective online students need to determine their level of readiness for independent study before they enter the classroom. Specific areas of weakness and strength may then be easily addressed and academic success assured.

Allegany College of Maryland

THE COLLEGE - Allegany College of Maryland

Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) was founded in August of 1961 by a resolution passed by the Allegany County Board of Education and approved by the Allegany County Commissioners. The College, which now has separate governance under a Board of Trustees, is an example of the rapid growth in the development of Maryland’s community college system.
Allegany College of Maryland was established to provide low-cost, high quality, higher education for the residents of the area. Its accessibility to the county’s center of population permits students to live at home, thus saving a substantial part of out-of-pocket costs for a college education.

Although heavy emphasis was placed on liberal arts transfer programs in the College’s early development, in recent years the College has developed highly specialized curricula, including those in the technological and pre-professional areas, as career programs to satisfy identified needs of the region. Ever cognizant of its responsibility to an industrial area pocketed in Appalachian Western Maryland, Allegany College of Maryland has accepted a mission to make tangible contributions through higher education to the economic and cultural growth of the area. Through its Board of Trustees, the College presents a dimension of learning that prepares men and women for the excitement and satisfaction of creative lives.

What is an online course?

Distance Learning at Allegany College of Maryland : ACM Distance Learning - What is an online course?

The computer becomes the classroom in an online course. An online course allows you to interact online to receive information about assignments, send completed homework to instructors, chat with fellow students and instructors, and conduct research.

Minimum Requirements:
Modern PC or Laptop with at least 512 MB of RAM, a 56k modem and Windows XP.

Recommended:
Modern PC or Laptop with at least 1 GB MB of RAM, a broadband Internet connection and Windows XP or Windows Vista.

You must have an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and an e-mail address. Online
courses are accessed via the Internet using a Web browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer and Firefox are supported).
Computer labs are available for use at each of our campus locations.

Allegany College of Maryland uses Blackboard as its course delivery system for most courses. Blackboard offers a password-protected "online classroom" that provides e-mail, course content, chat, calendar, discussion board and other course tools common in an online course.

Online courses are identified on our class schedule as "web" courses and additional information is available at the time of registration. Please note that some courses may require additional application software (Microsoft Office, etc.) for use in the on-line course. Most students find Blackboard easy to learn and easy to navigate, but if you have questions, contact us.

Is Distance Learning Right for You?

Taking a distance learning course has many advantages that might be important to you:

Increased scheduling flexibility.
An opportunity to study when and where you wish (anytime, anywhere learning).
Enhanced access to the instructor, course materials and course resources.
A chance to learn using new and emerging technologies.

However, a distance learning class is not for everyone. For instance, if you need the discipline of meeting on campus several times a week and you enjoy the in-person interaction between other students and your instructor, you are more likely to succeed in a regular class.

A successful distance learner:

is self-motivated (does not need a lot of direction, motivation from an instructor)
is self-disciplined (can budget time wisely and does not procrastinate often)
enjoys the challenge of learning independently (likes to read and learn)
takes charge of her/his own learning (willing to ask questions and get help when necessary)
reads well and communicates well in writing
may need a flexible schedule but understands that flexibility does NOT mean the course will be easy.

Advantage and Disadvantage of Distance Learning

Online Program Articles : Advantage and Disadvantage of Distance Learning

Like everything else in the world, you have to understand both the advantage and disadvantage of distance learning. Much depends upon the student undertaking an online course - how he best utilises the pros and cons of distance leaning. For some, if the flexibility that distance learning has to offer is a boon, for others that flexibility might become a difficulty in keeping themselves motivated. There are two sides to any coin, and an individual willing to take up distance learning needs to analyze and understand both the advantage and disadvantage of distance learning. The AdvangagesThe most promiment advantage of distance learning is the flexibility it has to offer to students. Anyone, anywhere can realize their dreams of education through the various distance learning programs available online. In today's hectic world, distance learning makes it possible for a home-maker or a busy professional to pursue further studies while allowing them to continue in their respective roles in everyday life.By breaking down the barriers of a typical classroom and the need for phycial attendance, new vistas are opened up for students by allowing them to learn from the convenience of their homes. You get to work at your own pace, and have your privacy. Gone are the pressures of rushing to attend classes on campus, the student is his or her own boss in distance learning and that turns out to be an important factor when considering the advantage and disadvantage of distance learning. The DisadvantagesIf flexibility is a boon for some, for other students it could turn out to be a deterrent. Owing to the lack of a physical teacher and a classroom, it might get difficult for some students to motivate themselves to study harder, and complete assignments on time. Procrastination is a drawback, and people who have a tendency to take it easy should stay away from an online course. Also, due to the nature of online learning, students do not get to enjoy personal interaction with fellow students and teachers; there are no group discussions that one can take part in, and the social part of the education process is lacking in distance learning.Whatever be the case it is up to the individual to survey the advantage and disadvantage of distance learning, and decide for himself if he is up to the challenge. In distance learning you are your own competitor, and to succeed you need to motivate yourself continously. If you are up to it, then distance learning is for you.

The Positive Aspects Of A Distance Learning CourseIf

Online Program Articles : The Positive Aspects Of A Distance Learning Course

If you are looking to learn and take an educational program but you are not near a prominent post-secondary institution, you might want to consider taking a distance learning course. It is a great way for you to get some learning in when you do not think you are within the distance to handle travelling to a full-time educational facility. With people living all over the place, you can often find yourself too far away from an educational institution that offers the classes that you would want, but with a distance learning course you can change all of that and start to get the education you want without leaving your home.Basically, a distance learning course is a way to get the educational qualities of the course that you would normally get from attending school but in your home. This allows the school to come to you, in a way, because it enables you to take part in all of the elements of the course without leaving your home. You can take part in classes through a web cam or a chat session on a message board and you can complete assignments in much the same way. This enables you to grasp all of the aspects of learning without travelling to the school or going out of your way to get there. This allows you to concentrate on your learning and do better in your class.Understanding Distance LearningOf course, there are many questions about the distance learning course that you may have. The best way to discover if distance learning is for you is to contact the closest school detachment you have nearby and ask them the important questions. There are basics that can be covered in general discussion with someone over the phone, but a lot of the particulars may have to still be set up with a face to face meeting at the school. In other words, you may have to make at least one trip to the actual place of learning in order to complete some of the paperwork and to interact with your instructor on some level beyond the computer. As you consider whether or not to take a distance learning course, you need to keep in mind that your education is the goal of taking such a course. If you are not interested in it for those reasons and you think you can actually make it to classes, you should not consider a distance learning course because you will be depriving yourself of a greater learning experience in person. Distance learning is normally reserved for those that, through a disability or a geographical issue, cannot actually make it to the classes and the effort to get there would be a detriment to their learning process.
