The doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) in technology management prepares specialists who have:

  • Knowledge of scientific and engineering developments
  • Knowledge of economic and political organizations of the global community
  • Sensitivity to the ethical and moral issues surrounding technology.

The program is offered through ISU's College of Technology in cooperation with a consortium of four other universities. It is a virtual organizational concept recognizing the role of each member university.

Program Requirements
A minimum of 90 hours of approved graduate credit is required. Successful completion of preliminary examinations, residency, dissertation, and defense of the dissertation are also required to earn the doctorate degree. The program planning committee recommends each student's program of studies and the use of previously earned credit acceptable to the program.

Program Study Areas

General Technology Core (15 hours)
The General Technology Core is designed to provide a conceptual framework for studies in technology. This core emphasizes the relationship of technology to the societal context from which it operates.

Research Core and Dissertation (30 hours)
The research core is composed of course work in research design, methodology, and statistical analysis. A dissertation (18 hours) requiring original research in a technology based study is required.

Technical Specialization (24-30 hours)
Five specializations are currently available, including manufacturing systems, construction management, quality systems, digital communications, and human resource development and training.

Internship (6 hours)
The internship is designed to provide the opportunity to test and experiment in industry, research organizations, government agencies, and other ventures associated with technology transfer and application. The internship is intended to support the area of technical specialization and provide opportunities for dissertation research.

Cognate Studies (12-18 hours)
Cognate studies may include previous graduate work, usually within the previous seven years, or the opportunity to develop an additional concentrated area of study. Studies can be outside of the normal area of studies in technology.

Admission Requirements
Individuals must apply and meet minimum requirements for admission to Indiana State University.

In addition, admission to the doctoral degree in technology management requires:

  • A bachelor degree from an accredited institution
  • A graduate grade point average of 3.5
  • Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores of 500 on the verbal and quantitative general tests
  • Five letters of recommendation
  • Validation of three years of occupational experience directly related to requested specialization
  • Statement of student's goal for selecting the program

Proposed and administered by the School of Technology at Indiana State University, a Ph.D. in Technology Management will be offered through a consortium of seven universities across the U.S. The overall doctoral program is designed to provide the student with planned opportunities to increase both depth and breadth of knowledge in technological studies. To guarantee the attainment of this goal, students must complete a minimum of 90 semester hours of graduate study above the baccalaureate degree, with a majority of the course work at the 600 level.

The doctor of philosophy in technology's unique residency requirement can be completed by candidates enrolling in a minimum of nine credit hours per semester for two semesters. Access to other courses offered by members of the consortium will be available at the home campus through the Web, videotapes, television, and other technology. Indiana State University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.
